Simply put - You increase the likelihood and risk of having an accident. You also increase the probability that you will have to eventually replace other more expensive critical brake or vehicle components. You should always pay attention to any signs that suggest your brakes may require service and respond accordingly. One indication your brakes might need attention is if your brakes seem to be responding more slowly than usual when you press them down. This can be a sign of worn brake pads, (or it could be low brake fluid levels, or other brake system-related issues). Regardless of the cause you should get your brakes seen to by a professional to avoid more serious problems down the track. Your braking system is critical to your safety. As brake pads wear down, your ability to stop quickly and smoothly is reduced, increasing the risk of accidents. What Happens When Brake Pads Wear Out? Brake pads are designed to create friction against the disc to slow your vehicle. Over time, that friction material gradually wears away. When they become too thin: Stopping distances increase Heat builds up faster Braking performance becomes inconsistent Other components (like rotors) can be damaged If ignored completely, the backing plate can contact the rotor — leading to metal-on-metal grinding and major repair costs. Why You Shouldn't Drive With Worn Brake Pads The increased risk of having an accident aside, there are three other very good reasons for not ignoring signs your brake pads are getting to worn to do the job well; Reduce vibration when braking Everyone wants to feel safe when travelling in a vehicle and an ideal situation, your vehicle will slow down in a smooth manner. But when there is an issue with the brakes, it will result in shaking throughout the car and can be noticed on the steering wheel when you depress the brake pedal. If this is the case, you should look into having your brakes serviced. The end result at best is that passengers (and even drivers) will experience a less comfortable ride - we don't even like to think about the worst case scenarios... Avoid unnecessary  damage to other brake components such as rotors or calipers Your vehicle's braking system is a complex arrangement of interdependent components, and when one is damaged, it can have a detrimental effect on other elements. For instance, when your brake pads wear past a certain point, it is likely to damage the brake rotors. When braking, the pads will squeeze the rotor, and if they are too worn, the exposed metal on them will cause them to grind against the rotors, resulting in an unpleasant noise and  potentially causing harm to the rotors.  Furthermore, the heat produced by the metal-on-metal friction due to the worn pads compressing the rotor may lead to warping or cracking. Although, typically, the rotors should outlast the pads, not replacing the pads on time can damage them, and as a result, require frequent repair. Thus, regularly having the pads changed and the brake system inspected will extend the life of all its components, preventing costly and avoidable repairs. Reduce the impact on your tyres It may be hard to believe, but if your brakes are not in good condition, they can also have a negative impact on your tires. Brake pads that are worn down, (or problem with rotors, calipers and other parts of the brake system)  generally necessitate frequent and forceful braking, which can eventually result in tyres becoming unbalanced or wearing out much quicker or unevenly. Therefore, taking care of your brakes means taking care of your tyres too... Warning Signs Your Brake Pads Are Worn Knowing the early signs can save you money and keep you safe: Squealing or screeching noises when braking Grinding sounds (urgent – pads may be gone) Reduced braking responsiveness Vibration when braking Brake warning light on your dashboard Visible thin brake pads Many modern brake pads even include wear indicators that make noise when they reach a critical thickness. So can you drive with worn brake pads? While it may be possible to drive with worn brake pads, however, it is STRONGLY NOT RECOMMENDED if they are extremely or inconsistently worn. This will not only increase the longevity of the brake components, but also ensure brake safety and improve your driving experience. Each independently owned Repco Authorised Service workshop offers you an Australian-wide warranty ensuring the goods and services you receive are free from defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. If something does go wrong or you have a question about our Nationwide Warranty, please get in touch with us here. With over 500 Repco Authorised Service centres Australia wide, there are few places you won't find one of our workshops within easy reach. Warranty Period For services provided by any Repco Authorised Service workshop, the warranty is for a period of 12 months or 20,000kms (whichever comes first) from the date of your invoice. Claims If you need to make a claim under the warranty, please contact the Repco Authorised Service workshop that originally completed the work on your vehicle. The workshop where the work was originally performed will be responsible for responding to and accepting claims. If the original workshop can't help, they may authorise another workshop in the network to assist. Terms and Conditions What does the warranty cover? The Repco Authorised Service workshop will have the option of reperforming, replacing or repairing the good or service if it is or becomes defective during the warranty period, at no additional charge.
a.       Where the good or service is replaced, repaired or reperformed pursuant to this warranty, the replacement good or reperformed service will be subject to the terms of this warranty commencing on the date of the original invoice.
b.       If you request for a good to be repaired, your Repco Authorised Service workshop may choose to replace the good with a refurbished good of the same type. The warranty will cover any reasonable diagnosis or scanning fees conducted by the relevant Repco Authorised Service workshop, if such goods or services are later found to be defective. If the work done on your vehicle involves the supply of services from another service provider nominated by the Repco Authorised Service centre, the warranty offered by such service provider will replace this Nationwide Warranty to the extent of such goods .  The Repco Authorised Service centre will advise you of the terms and conditions of such warranty. The rights and obligations under this warranty remain solely with the original Repco Authorised Service workshop that provided you with the product or service. The benefit of this warranty is personal to you and is not transferable. What does the warranty not cover? This warranty does not cover: normal wear and tear and consumable goods such as globes, wipers, and fluids; loss of any data stored in your vehicle like music or phone numbers; and any incidental loss or damage caused by the defect, such as towing fees, loss of profits, loss of use and loss of goodwill or other loss or damage that cannot reasonably be considered to arise normally. This warranty is void if the defect is a consequence of misuse, neglect, abuse, incorrect operation or improper maintenance of the vehicle, accident, or other use that is not otherwise caused by a Repco Authorised Service workshop. How to submit a warranty claim Step 1: Have your original invoice ready. Step 2: Ensure that you make your claim within the warranty period. Step 3:  Please contact the Repco Authorised Service centre that carried out the relevant repairs or maintenance on your vehicle. Their contact details are on  your original invoice.  Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law The goods and services acquired from a Repco Authorised Service workshop comes with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. For major failures with the service, you are entitled: to cancel your service contract with us; and to a refund for the unused portion, or to compensation for its reduced value. You are also entitled to choose a refund or replacement for major failures with goods. If a failure with the goods or a service does not amount to a major failure, you are entitled to have the failure rectified in a reasonable time. If this is not done, you are entitled to a refund for the goods and to cancel the contract for the service and obtain a refund of any unused portion. You are also entitled to be compensated for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage from a failure in the goods or service.
